I’m struggling to sleep again
A train passes by in the dead of night
The barely audible hum reminds me of the London underground
My stomach rumbles
Producing a noise reminiscent of a soft growl of a bear in a distant forest
The near silence of the outside world
Contrasts the busy traffic between my ears
A solitary bird chatters, prematurely, as it’s nowhere near dawn yet
I wonder the purpose of their untimely communication
Maybe they are a feathered drunk, noisily journeying home
It falls silent again, their conversation exhausted
Had they fallen asleep, found their home
Or continued their stuttering way through the estate of trees
Another train passes, different to the earlier one
This one is longer and has a louder, cyclical rhythmic beat
Freight or passenger, types of goods, number of carriages
Unimportant questions pass by remaining unanswered
Crazy, it’s already 4am, crazy, it’s only 4am
I’m struggling to sleep again
Not sure if I dozed off or if time speeds up in the hectic nothingness
I become conscious of a more varied and busier level of bird noise
Activity similar to a household, prepping kids for school and adults for work
Or maybe a work group meeting, organising and planning their day
Irrespective of all of this, another day has officially arrived
Insomnia, the Lithium that recharges my battery
