This is grandad’s poem for Lillie’s first Christmas day
Thoughts and words I need to share and convey
Lillie won’t remember anything that she see’s or is told
It’s not her fault coz she’s only 8 weeks old
Different for Alfie and Archie, making memories for the boys
Unwrapping their presents of clothes, games and toys
Some gifts requested expected and some a surprise
You can tell which is which by the look in their eyes
Some presents change shape in an attempt to disguise
Attempting to confuse and add mystery to the surprise
Anticipation in finding what’s in the box
When it’s my turn, I know it won’t be socks
Then it’s time for dinner, festive food piled up high
We battle through, reach the end and let out a sigh
With heavy eyes and over full belly
We sit down pretending to watch Christmas telly
I don’t care what anyone thinks
If I feel like it, I’ll grab 40 winks
As excitement subsides, normal routine is unfurled
And everyone returns to the devices of their online world
Christmas day is special, in it’s own way
But I have to admit, I prefer Boxing day
